Entry: First of Many

Let me begin with a warm "Welcome!" to my humble blog, and kick right off on this entry/journal business by introducing an artist who always brings a smile to my face. A Mr. Arnold Tsang. A man of many talents, who focuses on the digital painting spectrum of art. A tablet, pencil and pen are his weapons of choice when pressing the attack of forcing his imagination onto a blank digital or physical plane, generally going in with pencil for preliminary sketches.

What I love most about his art is the way he chooses to color things, and his wonderfully laid out lineart. His painting is all digital, but still bears an almost oil paint quality, where one could swear they can see the hint of the brush as colors layer atop one another. Despite being so technologically based, his work still has a very organic feel because of this. He displays a firm grasp of color in my opinion, and works to make everything feel not quite realistic, but very natural. What I've found by looking through many of his works, is that he uses cooler colors on the boundary of what he wants you to look at, with the warm colors drawing in your eyes, such as with the below peice.

His work is clear cut figure drawing, placing his created people into various environments with wondrous effect. His skill with digital painting gives his work a soft, almost oil paint look, and the variation of styles in which he does work is impressive. But even more so than his brush technique and adaptation to styles, I am always drawn in by his line work. Despite the sketchy underlay, it always ends crisp and clean, with every line having purpose in brings out a form through it's weight. It is a thing I've only recently begun to grasp at, and he serves as excellent inspiration for my own works.
